2016CUE_DinnerHarperCollege
Harper College prepares and serves a great meal at Tender Mercies.

CUE is designed to provide participants with a combined experience of meaningful service and social justice education that will motivate them to become active in the fight to end poverty and homelessness.

CUE is part of growing movement of alternative break programs around the country. We offer a way for high school and college students to get involved and delve into serious issues such as gentrification, economic disparity, displacement, affordable housing, hostile design, and the importance of political advocacy.

2016CUE_FoodStampActivityBoulder
An activity challenges participants on Food Stamps. Here, University of Colorado at Boulder share a meal.

The Homeless Coalition arranges for service opportunities at many of our 65+ member agencies. CUE participants volunteer at local homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other agencies that provide services for Cincinnatians experiencing homelessness. The Homeless Coalition coordinates educational activities so participants can learn about the root causes of homelessness and poverty. All participants will have the opportunity to hear from speakers, participate in team building activities, and reflect on how they can get involved in dispelling myths and creating empathy rather than apathy.

Groups live in Over-the-Rhine while here and stay from 3-7 days. Since the program first began in 2008, the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition has more than 60 groups, totaling more than 650 students from around the country. Past guests have included: Baldwin Wallace University, Bellarmine University, Benedictine University, Butler Alternative Breaks, Harper College, Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, Keene State College, Kenwood Baptist Church, Miami University, Nazareth College, Southern New Hampshire University, The Miami Valley School, The University of Vermont, University of Akron, University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Maine, University of South Florida, Benedictine University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Walsh University, and Xavier University, among others!
